PÁLINKA — a Hungarian brand of traditionally distilled fruit schnapps.
This academic year, I was tasked at my university to develop a regional branding strategy for the Hungarian fruit brandy «PÁLINKA» with the goal of successfully launching it into the Russian market. The first phase involved an in-depth study of the competitive landscape to determine the optimal product positioning. Competitor analysis revealed that the existing product design is often perceived as outdated, and the communication lacks focus on modern promotion and building an emotional connection with the consumer.
It was decided to delve not only into the commercial aspects but also into the cultural codes: to study the historical context, the traditions surrounding the origin of pálinka in Hungary, as well as the profile and values of the potential target audience in both Russia and the brand’s home country.
Based on this, the core idea behind the new packaging and brand communication became visual storytelling. At its heart are stylized yet recognizable silhouettes and symbols that make Hungarian culture unique. These details feel like part of a grand festive table—one that is as warm and generous as Hungary itself. After all, no authentic Hungarian celebration goes without a glass of pálinka. All of this is part of a single spirit. Thus, the product transforms from a mere commodity into an authentic historical narrative that speaks to Russian consumers in the language of quality, tradition, and genuine European identity.
