Remembering themselves as trees

to sketch old snags

I decided to create a series of illustrations about my Ikigai object—crooked and imperfect snags. They are very old. They still hold the memory of being trees, even though they are now dry wood.

The driftwood is rendered with ink—some areas are dense and highly textured, with meticulous attention paid to every crack. Yet, within them, I leave white space. The voids in the old wood are filled with something unseen—light and memory. Here, the white is not emptiness, but a fullness.
