Tokyo Gate Bridge is a massive piece of infrastructure, spanning a total length of 2.9 km. Its main element is a three-span hybrid bridge (a truss combined with a box girder) that measures 760 meters and features spans of 160, 440, and 160 meters. Strict limitations—due to the proximity of Tokyo International Airport (a maximum height of 98.1 m) and requirements for navigation clearance (54.6 m)—precluded the construction of a suspension or cable-stayed bridge. The hybrid system was chosen to integrate the high load-bearing capacity of the truss with the excellent rigidity and aerodynamic stability of the closed box girder.
