In the winter of 1925, a diphtheria epidemic broke out in Nome. The city was cut off from the world by ice and snowdrifts. Airplanes couldn’t fly, and the only railway line ended 1085 km away in the town of Nenana. It was decided to deliver the serum via a relay of 20 sled dogs.
