Levarsa Butba is one of the most renowned Abkhazian artists. Beginning as a simple village boy, he moved from his native village of Duripsh to the city of Sukhum to study painting at an art school. He later attended the Tbilisi Academy of Arts, graduating from the faculty of easel graphics. However, he forged his recognizable and unique style during the challenging 1990s.

Levarsa Butba, «Sukhumi»
Despite a difficult life, war in his homeland, and an illness that claimed his life in 2007, Levars' works evoke an eternal celebration. He painted the native landscapes of Sukhum in vibrant and warm tones—landscapes that were crumbling yet visually whole. Fellow artists note the patriotism and love for his homeland that permeate his work. Even after learning of his severe illness, he continued to paint; his works are like a reflection of a wounded but unbroken spirit.

What if Lewars Butba packed a suitcase full of paints and embarked on a round-the-world journey?
The Levarsa_dreams project explores how Levarsa might perceive and present the world to us. Landscapes from around the globe were generated using artificial intelligence, mimicking the style of Levarsa Butba’s most celebrated works.
