What lies behind a powerful visual concept, and how can it bring an idea to life?

post

My name is Anna Prishchepa, and I am a communication designer specialising in branding.

For me, every project begins with curiosity — a desire to look beyond the obvious and discover what makes an idea meaningful. I am fascinated by the stories embedded in cultural traditions, the symbolism of everyday objects, and the unexpected connections between seemingly unrelated things. These discoveries inspire me to develop original concepts and visual identities rooted in the unique character of each project.

The Museum of Woven Stories

I decode cultural meanings to develop original visual concepts, transforming research and insights into distinctive visual languages that reveal the essence of each project.

I approach design as a process of discovery, moving from exploring context and experimenting with visual form to identifying a core concept and translating it into a cohesive design solution.

1. EXPLORATION

I begin by investigating the context of a project, looking for significant details, cultural references, and connections that can inform the design. Understanding the environment and the stories behind it helps me identify opportunities for a meaningful visual concept.

A route can be more than a way to get from one place to another.

Direct Contact is an urban cultural initiative that invites residents to rediscover Moscow’s Basmanny District through art, history, and local initiatives. The task was to create a visual identity that unifies different project formats and helps visitors navigate events and urban spaces.

I explored the district’s urban environment, identifying significant places and connections between them. This research led me to see the route as a symbol of movement, discovery, and encounters.

The resulting visual system connects map points, directions, and architectural elements. I developed pictograms and maps that make navigation an integral part of the identity. The logo combines three elements: a building representing history, an arrow symbolising the route, and a map point marking a location.I also designed a map of Bauman Garden, where the exhibition took place, allowing visitors to pick up a brochure and explore the surrounding area independently.

2. EXPERIMENTATION

I explore how composition, geometry, and structure can shape visual communication. By experimenting with grids, shapes, and modular systems, I investigate how formal principles can become expressive tools rather than simply ways to organise information.

What if the structure behind a design became part of the design itself?

The Swiss Design Grid Calendar introduces the principles of Swiss Style through the work of its key representatives and their use of modular grids.By studying Swiss Style posters, I explored how grids organise visual information and shape composition. I turned this underlying structure into a visible design element, creating a series of calendar posters inspired by renowned designers. Each poster demonstrates a different approach to composition while making the grid an integral part of the visual experience. The calendar is presented in a folder accompanied by a booklet featuring original posters and quotes from their creators, allowing viewers to explore the ideas behind the designs in greater depth.

3. DISCOVERY

Through research and experimentation, I look for the central idea that connects a project’s context with its visual expression. Metaphors and unexpected associations help me find concepts that communicate more than the subject itself.

Individual fragments come together to tell a larger story.

The Museum of Woven Stories explores cultural memory through textiles, embroidery, and handmade objects, with a focus on Udmurt heritage.

I drew inspiration from traditional embroidery and Udmurt ornaments, where individual patterns contribute to a richer visual narrative. This led me to the metaphor of a patchwork quilt, in which separate fragments form a unified whole.
