REGISTRATION NUMBER: 1975 Project: Cutting Through Culture: The Sanctuary of the Fade «Dimejii Grooms» is a visual study of a Nigerian barbershop as a cultural institution. Using my Fine Arts and Industrial Design training from MAPOLY, I apply an architectural lens to this urban space. In this «Sanctuary,» the ritual of grooming meets the conviction of the Gospel. With a monochrome aesthetic, the project explores the brand philosophy: «HAIR & LIFE.» Bold environmental typography serves as a structural anchor, transforming a routine service into a meditative act. Through documentary photography, the series explores how a Lagos business functions as a «Street Parliament"—a sacred medium for identity and social renewal.
«Visual Identity: The 'Dimejii Grooms' and 'Dimejii The Barber' logotype is designed for maximum clarity and authority. Set against the shop’s monochrome palette, the branding signals a professional standard that mirrors the discipline of the spiritual environment.»
«The Core Manifesto: 'HAIR & LIFE' defines the shop’s mission. It elevates the act of barbering from a simple service to a holistic ritual, suggesting that the transformation of the 'Hair' is inextricably linked to the renewal of the client’s 'Life' and spirit.»
«Spatial Narrative: The interior of Dimejii Grooms is designed as a minimalist sanctuary. The stark black and white contrast removes urban distraction, focusing the client’s attention on the ritual of the chair. This open-plan layout facilitates communal dialogue, functioning as a 'Street Parliament' where spiritual and social exchange occur simultaneously.»
«The Spiritual Foundation: By integrating sacred text directly into the barbering station, the design collapses the boundary between the secular and the sacred. It serves as a visual reminder that the 'Hair & Life' philosophy is rooted in a higher calling, establishing the workstation as a place of communal ministry.»
«Instruments of Stewardship: These high-precision tools represent the 'Hair' aspect of the brand. The cold, metallic textures emphasize technical excellence and the discipline required to maintain the aesthetic standards of the sanctuary.»
«The Lithography of the Fade: This sequence documents the stages of a high-precision cut. Each movement is a studied gesture of renewal, where the architectural geometry of the hair reflects the discipline of the sanctuary. By showing the process, the brand demonstrates the 'Hair' aspect of its manifesto through technical mastery.»
«Universal Forms: Gender-Fluid Excellence. This study documents the application of the sanctuary’s rigorous fading techniques to diverse feminine silhouettes. By mastering the pixie cut and creative short forms, the brand proves that the 'Dimejii Grooms' standard of precision transcends traditional boundaries. It highlights a unified aesthetic of renewal, offering a bespoke identity to every member of the global congregation, regardless of hair texture or gender.»
«Atmospheric Ritual: 'It Is Well.' This motion study captures the sensory experience of the sanctuary. As the chorus 'It is well with my soul' provides the auditory backdrop, the visual focus remains on the meditative precision of the cut. This integration of gospel music and technical craft demonstrates how the 'Dimejii Grooms' brand creates a space where physical renewal leads to spiritual peace.»
«The Threshold of Renewal: Captured at the shop’s entrance, this portrait documents the final 'Product' of the sanctuary. The sharp, architectural lines of the haircut against the bold exterior branding signify a restored identity. This moment of self-expression at the threshold symbolizes the client’s transition from the spiritual quiet of the interior back into the urban environment, fully prepared and transformed.»
«Social Architecture: The Congregation. This study of the shop’s social hub demonstrates the 'Branding of a Cultural Institution.' It highlights the community bonds formed within the sanctuary, where the exchange of 'Good News' is as vital as the grooming service itself.»
«The Consecrated Mark: This final diptych merges the spiritual vision with the physical craft. As the client looks toward the sanctuary’s mandate (Left image), the 'Cross' pattern carved into the hair (Right image) serves as a mobile signature of the brand. The 'New Man' is now a walking manifesto prepared to carry the message and the aesthetic of the sanctuary back into the urban culture. The transformation from 'Hair' to 'Life' is complete.»
